What To Look For In A Tattooist

By Frederick Michaels McKinnon

It is becoming more and more common for people across the world to wear a tattoo. It is almost tribal in nature as it is often a way for like minded people to express themselves via insignia for their favourite football team, rock band, actor or film.

Tattoos take many forms, from a simple Mum or Dad on your arm, to full body art. Many people find that tattoos are addictive and so go on to have more and more as time passes. Take David Beckham as an example, he started with his children's names tattooed on his arms, but now has tattoos on his legs, back, arms and torso.

Many tattoos are done in other language symbols like Chinese lettering or an ancient language like Latin, but (particularly in Chinese) many symbols must be very precise because with the slightest change they can mean something completely different. So its worth doing some research into the exact symbols you want so that you don't end up with a tattoo that you thought said Matthew, leader of men actually says Special fried rice with peas, its been known to happen so its well worth doing the research.

Another decision that you should spend some time over is the tattooist that you use. A couple of years ago a girl wanted to get a tattoo that said Angel across her back. The tattooist did it beautifully in perfect 3 inch tall writing, but there was on thing wrong with it, instead of Angel he'd written Angle and she had not seen the error in his prep notes.

So what do we learn from this? Well, for one thing you should always check that your tattooist isn't dyslexic as fixing mistakes (if they can be fixed at all) can be very expensive and difficult.

All good tattoo shops will have a portfolio of their previous work for you to look through. This will give you some ideas if you really want a tattoo but are unsure what it is that you want to have. I would suggest that you start small and work your way up to bigger more elaborate designs as it will give you the opportunity to get used to the design on your body without the possibility of you regretting decision in the future.
